PC817 optocoupler
The PC817 SMD IC is an optocoupler designed with a unique principle of operation of providing electrical isolation and allowing signal transmission between circuits of different voltage levels. It consists an infrared LED which is on the input part and a phototransistor later on the output side, hence allowing transmission of data but maintaining full electrical isolation. As the name suggests, the smd is quite small enabling its use in applications that lack sufficient space.
Key Features
High Isolation Voltage: Up to 5000 Vrms; protects circuits from surges and spikes.
Compact SMD Package: Best suitable for high density PCB layouts
Wide Current Transfer Ratio (CTR): Between 50 % and 600%, allowing many applications.
Fast Response Time: Designed for fast signal transmission purposes.
Low Power Consumption: design that operates effectively and saves energy.
Broad Operating Temperature Range: Operates well within the range of -30°C to +100°C.
Applications
The PC817 is very useful and can be seen almost everywhere.
Industrial Automation: Excluding feed back signals in motor drives, PLCs and relay drivers.
Power Supplies: feedback and protection against overcurrent in SMPS and UPS.
Consumer Goods: interfacing controllers and remote control circuits.
Automotive Applications: shielding components such as engine control units.
Telecoms: shielding data buses and keeping signals sound.
Operating Principle
When a certain voltage is applied across an LED, it emits an infrared light which is picked up by the phototransistor as output current. In this way, transfer of signals is done safely without any physical electrical contact.
Advantages
The PC817 provides excellent isolation, dependability, and efficacy in a small price, small footprint package. It has a wide use in very many industries and hence it is easily trusted to make electronic system safe and also working well.
